Events:

• Alt Birth: 9,10 The Headstone on his grave in Beaufort West shows different information. It records his death on 21 Oct 1932 Aged 84 which also gives a different birth year of 1848 instead of 1843. In the Municipal graveyard records for the Blyth St. N/W cemetery, there are 2 M.J.Weeber's recorded in adjacent graves, RY-F9 dated 31 Oct '32 and F10 dated 5 Sep '33. The second must refer to his spouse (who has the same initials) although she is recorded as having died in Cape Town.

• Historical: Beaufort West. 14 Matthys Johannes Weeber was born and grew up in the Karoo town of Beaufort West. He had one brother Pieter and at least four sisters. Like most of the youngsters of that time he received little formal education when compared with the standard today and directed his life toward farming at an early age. Beaufort West had established itself as an ideal sheep farming area and this was obviously the intended activity of most of the young folk - especially when their parents were also involved in sheep farming as Matthys's were.He was a simple man with basic needs who was always ready to help his neighbour but must have had good business sense and obviously worked very hard - because he became an affluent farmer with a total farm area of approximately sixty thousand morgen ( approx. 51000 hectares - or two hundred square miles) - an area so vast that one could not cross it in one day on horseback.
Although originally of German stock the Weebers spoke English and Afrikaans at home. They belonged to the Dutch Reformed Church and were staunch supporters of the United Party. In fact Matthys's brother Pieter decided to go into politics and became a senator in the South African Parliament at which time Matthys bought his farm Sunnyside - which is owned by the Nel Family today. Pieter married but had no children of his own. He adopted a daughter Jessie Verster who was known by my family as cousin Jessie. Matthys married a miss Aspeling and lived on the farm Elandsfontein where they raised seven children - Eric, Carrie, Lulu, Percy, Evelyn and Martin..After his first wife had passed away, Matthys married Maggie (Magriet) a teacher from the Riversdale district - who was approximately thirty years younger than he. She was a Du Preez and her brother Wouter farmed in the area - his farm "Windsor" is on the road to Stillbaai soon after the turnoff from the national road. The twins Olga and Alma were born of this marriage and they too lived on the farm Elandsfontein..Apparently there was a certain amount of rivalry between the two sets of children with the first seven claiming that the twins were receiving special attention. For this reason the twins were sent to school at Worcester and not to the "posh" schools in Cape Town where the seven had been educated. After matriculating at Worcester both Olga and Alma went to Teachers Training College in Cape Town where they qualified as teachers. Olga specialised in physical education.Matthys died in 1932 at the age of 89 years - and Maggie died one year later in 1933 at the age of sixty. Both are buried in the cemetery at Beaufort West..Some Anecdotes In his kindness apparently Matthys signed surety for a certain Mr Bailey who farmed in the Beaufort area. While the family were on holiday at the Strand the fun was cut short by the news that Bailey had died and that the surety was being called. It's not sure what the amount of the surety was but it did not bother Matthys. That was the sort of person he was - if he could help he would - and he did not expect a return. When the twins were seven years old the family moved into town permanently as Matthys was becoming too old to farm actively. He actually tried to sell off the farms, but money was scarce and he was obliged to let some. Those he did sell he was obliged to leave large bonds on.In the town house Olga and Alma have memories of "the men" sitting in the smoking room of an evening after supper. One of the regular visitors was a certain Mr or Reverend Barnard, a missionary from the "Sendeling Kerk" - whose sons Chris and Marius were to achieve fame as heart surgeons with Chris performing the world's first heart transplant. Apparently Matthys provided some of the money for one of the brother's university education and the Weebers - who were quite well off, often sent over vegetables and goodies to the Barnards who, like most missionaries, struggled for money. Many years later when Olga and Eddie left Beaufort West Chris Barnard played the piano in the band at their farewell party.
The Riversdale connection was obviously well maintained, as Olga and Alma have many fond memories of visits to the seaside at Stillbaai - the resort closest to Riversdale. The journey took two days and was undertaken on oxwagon. At the halfway point they had to outspan and sleep over in the veld. This was always quite an event with the braai fires burning and everyone getting geared up for the holiday at the seaside. When they reached the river mouth the party had to be ferried across the river to Stillbaai where they stayed in a cottage belonging to the Wege family - very good friends of Maggie's. Stories are told of "streepsakke" full of oysters for a penny and of feeding the eels at the "paling gat" which is still an attraction today and, I think a national monument. This "paling gat" is a well of fresh water which flows from the hillside, close to where the Versveld family home stood, and in which the eels lived.
The famous South African artist Jan Volschenk was an associate of the family in the area. In fact Olga and Eddie owned a Jan Volschenk painting of the Kaffirkuils river mouth (the river at Stillbaai) - which was given to them as a wedding gift. Cousin Jessie was a close friend of Vera Volschenk (his daughter) who is also well known and paints from her cottage on the banks of the river at Stillbaai. Olga and Eddie owned several Vera Volschenks which were passed on to the children. The family owned a holiday house in the Strand. It actually belonged to Maggie and she left it to Olga and Alma when she died. They did not want it and sold it. The house still stands today.Like all young men of his time Matthys journeyed to the diamond diggings in Kimberley when the first fever was high - as stories were leaving the district of fabulous wealth and good times - which were generally not available elsewhere at the time. He worked a claim for some time but without much success - and eventually sold it to the next keen arrival who promptly found an enormous diamond the very next day. The new owner was so pleased with his acquisition that he was prompted to give Matthys a gold watch out of gratitude. What a consolation. (I inherited the watch from Olga - and still have it in my possession). After selling the claim Matthys returned to Beaufort West to pursue the life he knew best - sheep farming.Building up the farms was no easy task in those days. There was very little mechanisation and no fencing to keep out the jackals. Apparently Matthys was extremely dedicated and hard working in this regard. He travelled on horseback and built kraals for the sheep by stacking stones. Because of the vast distances he had to travel he was often not able to return home at night and slept out in the open with his sheep, under the stars. In the Karoo where the nights can be bitterly cold this could become quite an arduous experience. He recalled that he often slept with a wheelbarrow covering his head to keep out the cold.
After his death Matthys's attorney, a Mr Theron, arranged for the winding up of the estate. All the farms were sold through the Board Of Executors for around ten shillings a morgen - this being the time of the great depression. It has been claimed that in the settling of his affairs many of the bonds were never paid out and that the estate ended up considerably short of its real value.

• Historical: 7 Information from Alwyn Smit resulted in the following exchanges:-
"Alwyn, Do I understand it correctly that c1 Christiaan Dettlief Pieter Ol(de)wage, bought an erf from (of?) Marthys Johannes Weeber for 250 pounds sterling?"
"I am not sure that I have sent you an answer on this one!!! (?) Yes, you are correct! Christiaan bought the erf from Matthys Johannes de Jager. Most probably Matthys junior."

• Death: KAB MOOC 6/9/4180ef 35899 gives 39 Donkin St. Beaufort West as the residence where Matthys died.

• Will: In his will, DN KAB MOOC 6/9/4180 Ref 35899, Matthys made the following bequests:- Margaretha Jacomina Du Preez (His 2nd wife) £1500
Percival, his 5th child of his 1st marriage £60 per annum for maintenance
Maria Carolina the 2nd child of his 1st marriage, £90 per annum to maintain
And the residue of his estate to be equally divided between the rest of his children excepting Martin Gustaf , his 3rd child of his 1st marriage who "left South Africa many years ago and believed now to be in South America" The rest were Alma (Van Wyk) and Olga, Evelyn Marguerite (Welsch), Catherine Agnis (Jackson) Johan Eric Aspeling, and George. In George's case, £3500 was to be deducted in consideration of sums expended for his studies and advances made to him from time to time.

Matthys married Georgina Agnes Aspeling [3503], daughter of Johan Eric Aspeling [3506] and Maria Carolina Unknown [3507], on 10 Apr 1876.15 Georgina was born in Dec 1850 in George South Africa and died on 26 Mar 1904 in Elandsfontein, Beaufort West, South Africa aged 53. Another name for Georgina was Georgie Aspelling.15

Events:

• Family: MOOC? 6/9/578 2485 lists 8 children without dates of birth and have been included

• Alt Birth: Calculation from the Death Notice MOOC KAB 6/9/496 Ref 1017 shows a birth date of Dec 1850, taken as more correct than Feb 1851 previously given.

• Alt Birth: 1850. 15 This source gives her birth date as 18 Dec 1850. The date shown is thus probably a baptismal date.

• Alt. Death: 1904. 15 This source says she died at 49 Donkinstraat, Beaufort West

• Occupation: According to MOOC KAB 6/9/496 Ref 1017, she is described as being a farmers wife at her death date 1904

Children from this marriage were:

+ 97 M    i. George Henry Weeber [3500] was born in 1893 in Beaufort West South Africa and died on 5 Nov 1931 in Queenstown South Africa aged 38.

+ 98 F    ii. Maria Carolina Weeber [3508] .14

+ 99 M    iii. Martin Gustav Weeber [3509]

+ 100 F    iv. Catherine Agnes Weeber [3510]

+ 103 M    vii. Johan Eric Aspeling Weeber [3540] .

Matthys next married Margarita Jacomina Du Preez [3516] on 20 Apr 1906 in Riversdale Cape Province Souith Africa. Margarita was born in 1872 in Riversdale, died on 4 Sep 1933 in Volks Hospital Cape Town South Africa aged 61, and was buried in Cape Town ?. Other names for Margarita were Maggie Du Preez, Margaritha Jacomina Du Preez, and Margrietha Jacomina Du Preez.

Marriage:

• Marriage: Date of marriage is date of ANC(?)

Events:

• Alt Death: 9,10 I assume she is commemorated with her spouse in a graveyard in Beaufort West but her date of death is recorded as 5 Sep 1933 aged 61. I assume she was buried in Cape Town. However, the Beaufort West Municipal graveyard record gives a location for her next to her spouse of RY F10 in the Blyth St. N/W cemetery.
Her DN from KAB MOOC 6/9/4324 Ref 39042 says she died on 4 Sep 1933 in the Drakmes(?) Nursing Home, Cape Town.

• Marriage: 16 After his first wife had passed away, Matthys married Maggie (Magriet) (3516)a teacher from the Riversdale district – who was approximately thirty years younger than he. She was a Du Preez and her brother Wouter farmed in the area – his farm “Windsor” is on the road to Stillbaai soon after the turnoff from the national road.

• 0ccupation: 15 She was a teacher at Riversdale

• Marriage: The DN for Matthys Johannes Weeber KAB MOOC 6/9/4180 Ref 35899 includes an Ante-Nuptial Contract with Margaretha Jacomina Du Preez, and although the details are not clear that portion of the DN is reproduced as 2 images herein.Matthys agrees, that in the event he predeceases her, she be paid a settlement of £1500 (One thousand five hundred Pounds) This in fact is repeated in his Will.

• Children: According to her DN in KAB MOOC 6/9/4324 Ref 39042 only Alma and Olga are recorded as her children and hence the 3rd child in Legacy namely .Caroline Weeber
must belong elsewhere. Perhaps she is the Maria Carolina who is a child of Matthys' first wife, and on this premise she has been removed from the link with Margrietha du Preez..

Children from this marriage were:

+ 104 F    i. Alma Weeber [3517] was born on 11 Aug 1907 in Beaufort West, South Africa and died in Jan 2009 in Somerset West, South Africa aged 101.

+ 105 F    ii. Olga Weeber [3518] was born on 11 Aug 1907 in Beaufort West, South Africa and died in Dec 1993 in Cape Town, South Africa aged 86.

40. Pieter Jacobus Weeber [1000] (Marthinus Johannes12, Marthinus Johannes4, Johan Valentin1) was born on 23 Jan 1845 in Beaufort West South Africa, died on 21 Oct 1930 in Donkin Street (Home) Beaufort West aged 85, and was buried in Blocka Ry38, Bird St. Cemetery, Beaufort West South Africa.9,10 Another name for Pieter was Pieter Jacobus Weeber.

Events:

• Historical: Occupation. Pieter J WEEBER was a Senator of the British Cape Colony Parliament (1889-1907) and his nephew was Alan Wilson of the fateful Shangani patrol (in S. Rhodesia) around 1800. He and his wife Annie (nee Wilson) were Godparents of Rona (nee Blyth) Johnson. They had an Adopted daughter Jesse (VERSTER)
In his DN of KAB MOOC 6/9/3796 Ref 28122 he is qouted as being a retired farmer.

• Alt Birth: He died on 21 Oct 1930 aged 85 years and 9 months. This would make his alternate birthdate in Jan 1845 not 1843. The former date is accepted because the 1843 date would be the date of birth of his brother Matthys Johannes Weeber. This is confirmed by the date on his Headstone in the Beaufort West Cemetery which states that he died at age 85.

• Will: In his Will he leaves 200 Pounds plus residue of estate to his wife (Anne Murray Wilson) 300 Pounds to his sister Betty Weeber, 2000 Pounds to his (adopted) daughter Justina, 100 Pounds to May Blyth, daughter of his sister Cornelia Louisa Blyth, and 100 Pounds to Ina de Jager.
In his DN KAB MOOC 6/9/3796 Ref 28122 there is an Annexure which lists bequests to family as follows:- Anne Murray (spouse) £ 1000
Betty Weeber 500
Justina J.M.Verster 5650
May Blyth 100
Ina 200

• Historical: 1891, Beaufort West. 8 At 4pm on Wednesday2 Sep 1891, the Mrs C,W. Andrews, wife of the Magistrate,
named the new bridge over the Gamka river the WEEBER Bridge, after Senator Pieter Jacobus WEEBER, by breaking a bottle of champaigne against its masonry. There is a graphic photo of the bridge crowded with local resoidents on the occasion on page 44 of this source.

• Historical: Beaufort West. 14 Although originally of German stock the Weebers spoke English and Afrikaans at home.

• Historical: A bridge over the Gamka River near Beaufort West was named after Peter J WEEBER and one account of it is given on the image included in his photo gallery the reference being KAB PWD 2/5/49 AIX.

• Will: KAB MOOC 6/9/3796 28122 Estate includes his will and more information on other members and friends of the family
In the image named Admin2PieterJacobusWeeber appoints.his spouse, Anne Murray Wilson, his adopted daughter Justina Johanna Maria Verster (born Davidtsz) and Julius Robert Jackson as Executors Testamentary

Pieter married Anne Murray Wilson [3498], daughter of Robert Wilson [3504] and Unknown, in Beaufort West. Anne was born in 1853 in Glasgow, Scotland and died on 3 Feb 1932 in Monastry Sea Point, Cape Town, South Africa aged 79.

• Historical: Anne's nephew was the Alan Wilson of the fateful Shangani Patrol in the then Southern Rhodesia, now Zimbabwe. There is an impressive memorial to the patrol at the site of Cecil Rhodes' grave in the Matopo Hills in Matabeleland, Zimbabwe.Allan WILSON was the one killed at WILSON'S Last Stand.
Jack CARRUTHERS, who had been earlier asked by Wilson to form the Victoria Scouts which he did & led them through the Matabele war of '93. had this to say about the tradic event:-
"Forbes had decided to go to Shiloh, a Mission station twelve miles west, with the rain soaked remainder of the column, and await reinforcements. By this time we had no tea, sugar or salt, and had to subsist on any kind of food we could gather at deserted kraals. I told Major Wilson, I would go with the looted cattle, and return to join him at Shiloh. I wished him goodbye. Those were my last words with Wilson under the eaves of the Inyati station, he was sheltering from the rain, with a plaid shawl over his head and shoulders. The premises were occupied by the men. I had just returned from scouting, having secured some fowls, which I had cooked. I took Wilson some scones made from ground munga, leven with Kaffir beer, also a fowl. I tied another on to Kirkton's saddle and gave Sergeant Brown my Billy as they rode off to Shiloh. Wilson rode away on his big cream horse in his shirt sleeves, riding trousers and top boots. In his belt stuck a tobacco bag with his clasp knife on the side hook, his waterproof coat hung loosely over the pummel of his saddle. He carried no weapon of defence. A tall easy going man, never perturbed, a leader of men. To know the man was to like him, the last I saw of my pals, five mess mates including Fitzgerald."

• Cemetery: 9,10 She is commemorated as Anne M. Weeber on her spouse's headstone in the Beaufort West Cemetery, and having died at the age of 78. This makes her birth date 1854 instead of 1853, but the latter may be more accurate.

• Historical: 1874, Cape Town. 8 She arrived in Table Bay from Scotland, in the steamboat "European" in June 1874 and was employed as an assistant teacher. She resigned a year later to mary Pieter Jacobus WEEBER.

• Baptism: In KAB MOOC 6/9/3796 Ref 28122 there is an affidavit by Anne that she was baptised in Scotland but cannot locate the certificate,

The child from this marriage was:

+ 106 F    i. Jessie Weeber [3499] .

41. Maria Elizabeth Weeber [999] (Marthinus Johannes12, Marthinus Johannes4, Johan Valentin1) was born on 9 Mar 1850 in Beaufort West South Africa, died on 4 Aug 1932 in Beaufort West South Africa aged 82, and was buried in Cemetery Beaufort West.9,10 Another name for Maria was Mimmie Weeber.

Events:

• Historical: Occupation. 14 Mimmie was a teacher about 1880 and taught at Riversdale before returning to Beaufort where she lived as a spinster like another sister Betty.

• Cemetery: Mimmie is commemorated in two places in the Beaufort West Cemetery. One a self standing headstone, and two a twin headstone with Ellen A. CUMMINGS b.20 Jun 1844 in South America, and d. 31 May 1926 presumambly in Beaufort West. Rona Kennedy remembers her mother Johanna Johnson (nee Blyth) mentioning a Miss Cummsie, who was also a teacher.

42. Cornelia Louisa Weeber [962] (Marthinus Johannes12, Marthinus Johannes4, Johan Valentin1) was born in Jul 1852 in Beaufort West South Africa, died on 26 Mar 1938 in Beaufort West South Africa aged 85, and was buried in Beaufort West South Africa. Another name for Cornelia was Nellie Weeber.

Events:

• Alt Birth: Jul 1852 ?, Beaufort West South Africa. MOOC KAB 6/9/5062 58803 The Death Notice states she was a widowed housewife residing at 43 Bird St. Beaufort West and died in the Beaufort West Hospital at age 85 years and 8 months which makes her estimated birth date as July 1852. In her Will, copied but excluding its reference number, she left Erf 43 Bird St. as an asset in her Estate.
There is an image of her birth certificate that is not completely recorded and omits her actual birth date,

Cornelia married John Alexander Blyth [994], son of David Henderson Blyth [702] and Sophia Catharina Kinnear [703]. John was born on 15 Dec 1861 in Beaufort West South Africa,4 was christened on 12 Feb 1862 in Wesleyan-Methodist Church, Beaufort West,4 died on 22 Nov 1910 in Beaufort West South Africa12 aged 48, and was buried on 23 Nov 1910 in Blocka, Ry198, Bird St. Cemetery, Beaufort West South Africa.12

Events:

• Occupation: Farmer and Accountant. John Alexander Blyth was first a farmer and then an accountant in Beaufort West. His Death Notice MOOC KAB 6/9/655 Ref 3113 says he was a bookeeper.

• Military Service: Survivor of Rorke's Drift (?), 1879.

• Family: At the request of his brother William Low Blyth who lost his wife and two children from Diptherea, he adopted his surviving son George Clarence Blyth who thereafter lived with them in Bird St Beaufort West.

• Alt Birth: 1860. His Death Notice records that he was 49 years and 11 months old, and as his death date of 22 November 1910 is confirmed, there is an alternative date for his birth which is 15 Dec 1860.

• Historical: The BLYTH's lived at 43 (or 39) Baird St. for many years, but the name of the street was changed to Bird St for no known reason as yet. After the death of May BLYTH, the last resident of the house, it was demolished and a police station erected on the property.

• Baptism: 4 Source of record Microfilm 1560855 Item23 Ref 19 Loc 4652 Transcribed Ellen Stanton

• Alt Birth: According to Robert Blyth he was born in Worcester, Cape Province, South Africa.

• Historical: John Alexander BLYTH (the eldest son of David Henderson Blyth) was born in Worcester, Cape Province in 1861. There is uncertainty about this as his parents were already living in Beaufort West having married there the previous year. He spent much of his life in Beaufort West. He worked first as a farmer and later as an accountant (book-keeper?) in the town.
There was a suggestion that he had won a medal at the Battle of Rorke's Drift in 1878 when he would have been barely seventeen. Subsequent investigation by Ralph Anderson has shown that he was not at Rorke's Drift. However he was connected with the Beaufort West Volunteer Rifles (a sort of home guard regiment )and was awarded the Cape of Good Hope Service Medal. He died at his residence in Beaufort West at the relatively young age of 48 and is noted as a book-keeeper by profession.
He had 4 children for whom data is available but Penny Sheppy has listed Dulcimer, Corinne and Ermine as three younger sisters for whom we have no details.

Children from this marriage were:

+ 107 F    i. Johanna (Hanna) Catherine Blyth [963] was born in 1884 in Beaufort West Cape Province South Africa. and died in 1974 aged 90.

Ry-K4 Blyth St. N/W Cemetery, Beaufort West. Other names for Elizabeth were Betty Verster, Betty Weeber, and Elizabeth Angela Weeber. She never married and had no children.

Events:

• Alt Death: It is surely not a pure coincidence that the Beaufort West Municipal graveyard records show an E.E. Weebere(?) burried in NY-K4 on the 25 Aug 1937, which date is identical to her death date recorded from different source. (KAB MOOC 6/9/4960 Ref 56022)

• Alt Name: In MOOC KAB 6/9/3796 Ref 28122 there is a receipt of a bequest under the Will of Pieter Jacobus Weeber, of an amount of £ 200.... and the revenue stamp was over written by "Betty Verster" and Betty is referred to as Pieter's "sister" in the Will itself.

• Death: The DN of KAB MOOC 6/9/4960 Ref 56022 was compiled by Justina Johanna Maria Verster (nee Davidtsz) who was in charge of the house where Elizabeth died.and it was witnessed by Ina G? de Jager. Both these ladies were also beneficiaries under the will of Pieter Jacob Weeber, Justina being an adopted daughter. Ina on the other hand is most probably the daughter of ?

44. Sophia Christina Catharina Weeber [997] (Marthinus Johannes12, Marthinus Johannes4, Johan Valentin1) was born on 1 Jul 1857, died on 16 Apr 1945 in Doornrivier, Herold, Western Cape, South Africa7 aged 87, and was buried in Herold Estates Cemetery, Herold Western Cape. Events:

• Historical: 13 An E-mail received from Alwyn Smit on the 30 Apr 2007
Hello Ralph,
It is a pity that my about the life of general Matthys Johan de Jager, my grandfather, is in Afrikaans. As you know he was born in Beaufort-West in 1872. Then his father (Petrus Jacobus de Jager) went to the Diamond Fields as a Law Agent. There three of my grandfather's died as well as his widowed aunt in 1881. Petrus then came back to B-West and then he left for the Transvaal. Matthys Johan joined the Transvaal State Artillery and when the ABW broke out, he was in charge of the first Battery, but he never himself used the Long Tom. He wrote the necessary exams and was caught in battle as Captain de Jager near Ermelo in January 1902. At the time Martha Maria (his wife) was held in Merebank Camp near Durban with her two kids Hester Cecilia de Jager and Petrus Jacobus de Jager (he received his grandfather's name). Matthys Johan was then sent to St Helena where he wrote his memoirs. He must have been a very intelligent man, because all the dates mentioned in his memoirs are correct! On his return from St Helena he farmed with a certain Grey near Ermelo. (He always wanted to farm!). But then generals Louis Botha and Jan Smuts sent him a message to come and see them in Pretoria, because they thought he was wasting his lief on the farm! At first he didn't want to go, but then Martha Maria persuaded him to go as they had very tough times on the farm. He then joined the old Transvaal Police in 1907 I think and was stationed in the Waterberg. In 1911 he was part of the Souyh African Contingent that went over to London for the coronation of King George V. Of this trip I have a photo album full of pictures and the ship's logs with the daily mileage etc. Very interesting stuff and absolute Africana! Also the signatures of almost all that went there. From England he went to France and Belgium to select dogs for the police school in Pretoria. He decided on Dobermann Pinchers and brought them to Cape Town. From there to Pretoria. This were the very first Dobermanns in Southern Africa! And this the reason for my mother (Marguerite Irene Smit/Meiring/Oosthuizen \endash nιe De Jager) for only keeping Dobermann dogs almost all her life! Then Botha and Smuts asked him to join the army at Voortrekkerhoogte in 1912. He was there during the Rebellion and then Botha and Smuts sent him to the newly established Tempe Camp at Bloemfontein. I have several pictures of the camp during the early days. Then after the German Southwest Africa campaign he was sent to Windhoek to take charge of the police as well as the army. In 1917 he was the leader of the forces that went up to Ovamboland (known as the Ovamboland Expedition) to stop the fights among the tribes and Mandumi the one tribal leader. I have a thick photo album full of postcard pictures about the whole trip! After Mandumi was shot by the Portugese soldiers or the Ovambo's themselves, they offered him a young Ovambo girl as a second wife! He had quite a problem in persuading them that he already has a wife at home! Martha Maria often joked about this!!! Smuts wanted to give him a farm for free "for everthing that he had done for government and his country through all the years," but he did not accept the offer. He was of opinion that the Germans etc would say that he got a farm for free from government and he didn't want that at all! So he told Smuts: Okay than, I'll go and find a farm I like, but then I'll pay to the last penny for it! And that is how he bought the farm Excelsior near the airport on the road towards Gobabis on the Botswana border. When he died in 1939 he still owed £3000 on the farm! What I still have, is an elephant tusk that
was given to him by Jannie Smuts! I had to register the tusk some years ago and it now has a registration number burnt into it. He later became the chairman of the Land Committee of SWA and he also started a political party, having the simpathy of all the Germans behind him. (He always tried to fight for their rights and keep them in SWA. He said their skills were important for the building of the country etc). He became ill in 1938 and after being treated by various doctor's they in the end decided to send him to a specialist in Cape Town. (We can only guess that he had cancer of the Old Man's Glands, because the doctors never said anything. You know how it was in those days!) Matthys (Mat) Gustav de Jager went to the station at Beaufort-West to see his dear cousin (nephew? I always get this mixed up!). When he came at the door of the compartement, he just turned around without saying anything and left the train. Matthys died on the train between B-West and Laingsburg. It was if the son of B-Wes came back to die there! Amazing! His corpse was sent from Cape Town to Windhoek where he had a full military funeral. I have many pictures of the funeral too! A pity that you can't read the book about him! He had one great full life!!! And never a dull moment!
Hope you have some kind of picture of the life of Matthys Johan de Jager!?
Kind regards.
Alwyn.
(The English is giving me some problems my friend!)

He received the DSO DTD for his effeorts as fiurther described by Alwyn Smit
Distinguished Service Order yes. And Dekorasie vir Troue Dienst. The Dutch version of the DSO. He had eight medals in all. All kept at the Pretoria Museum. I saw it some six years ago, all polished up specially for me… in a huge vault …and then my camera didn't want to work! But the feeling I got standing there… looking at the medals on the white tablecloth and all alone by myself…. I can't describe it to you! Sacred moments it was!!!!!!!!!! I still have the minitures however!!!! Got it from my mom.
