• Historical: The following eulogy on the life of Evalina Margarita Weber was written by her granddaughter, Meg Perkins (nee Francis) on Easter Sunday, the 8th April 2007
"Evelyn Margaret Weber was baptized in the name of Evalina Margarita Weber in the Dutch Reformed Church in Beaufort West. She often told the story of her mother's death when she was about four years old and the remarriage of her father. She talked about the little twin sisters that she had and her "doctor brother George". Her grandchildren were also aware that she had sisters in Cape Town.
On 9 November 1925 she married Noel St Vincent Mai Welch, whose father, Edward Mai Welch, was a printer and publisher in Queenstown, Cape Province. Noel was one of six children, many of whom had moved to Southern Rhodesia with their parents when they retired to a farm. They were married in the church where Evelyn had been baptized. In about December 1927 Evelyn was on her way to Cape Town to greet her brother, who was returning from England. She was involved in a car accident and suffered a head injury.
Apparently, Evelyn spent six months in a nursing home in Cape Town, unable to speak for much of the time. She then gave birth to a daughter, Valmai, in July 1928 and returned home to her husband. Evelyn struggled to manage and the baby spent some time on her grandfather's farm at Beaufort West. About three years later another baby, Peter Edward Mai Welch, was born.
Evelyn was a beautiful and talented woman who had played the piano, enjoyed reading the works of Dickens and had worked in an office in Johannesburg before her marriage. After the accident, she was somewhat dependent on her husband, who was very loyal and took care of everything. She dressed beautifully, and her home was always spotless. She had two little cocker spaniels and she doted on her grandchildren. Noel and Evelyn spent six months touring Europe in 1957 when he retired from his position as a manager at Barclays Bank in Port Elizabeth. Unfortunately, Noel died in 1964 as the result of another motor vehicle accident, this time in Rhodesia. She lived for another twenty years and always said that she had had the perfect husband.
She is remembered as a very kind and loving grandmother, singing lullabies to us in African languages \endash thula, thul', thula baba thula sana. Fifty years later, her granddaughter was singing the same songs to Evelyn's great great grandchildren in Australia."

Evelyn became a Catholic towards the end of her life. No-one was quite sure why, but she was living at a Catholic Home and her funeral would have been conducted by the Catholic priest. Nazareth House Pretoria might have records. She definitely died before 1988 as that was the year we left South Africa. I think she was 86 years old so it was probably 1984. We believe that she was born in 1898."
It was later discovered that her baptismal certificate gave her birth date as1897.

• Alt Birth: ¹⁷ From Nazareth House, Pretoria records the date of birth is 3 Apr 1897, and death 23 Sep 1985 and both differ by one year from those of the previous source.
From her baptismal certificate, she was baptised on the 3 May 1897, and hence her birth on 3 April 1897 is more acceptable. .

• Name Change: From a copy of her baptismal certificate dated 3 Nov 1933 she was baptised Eveline Marguerite Weeber at the N.G.Kaerk, Beaufort West on the3 May 1897.
However, her name given on MOOC KAB 6/9/496 Ref 1017 is Evelyn Margarite.

Eveline married Noel St.Vincent May Welch [3514], son of Edward Mai Welch [3543] and Minnie Marion Hall [3544], on 9 Dec 1925 in Dutch Reformed Church. Beaufort West, South Africa. Marriage status: uncertain. Noel was born on 31 Jan 1898, died in Jun 1964 in Port Elizabeth, Southern Africa aged 66, and was buried in Ashes Interred And Named In Wallof Remembrance, St.Mary's Church Port Elizabeth. Other names for Noel were Noel St.Vincent Mai Welch and⁷ Noel Welsh.

Marriage: Meg Perkins in an e-mail dated 7 Apr 07 says that her mother advises that Norel and Evelyn Welch were married in the Dutch Reformed Church, Beaufort West on 8 Dec 1925 and adds "I guess she should know!"
So we will relegate the alternate informatiom of a marriage in Cape Town in Nov 1926 as of secondary importance.

• Alt Marriage: Meg Perkins (nee Francis) writes as follows:-
She was living at the Nazareth House Old Age Home so perhaps the service was held there? The date engraved in Evelyn's wedding ring is 9.11.1925 and not 8 December. I think the wedding ring date should be trusted above what anyone thinks the date was.
But the date of marriage solemnisation on the Certificate gives 9 December 1925. This includes the cancellation date on the revenue stamp

• Occupation: ¹⁴ Mr Welch was a bank manager at Knysna. We subsequently learned that it was Barclays Bank.
According to Meg Perkins (nee Francis) he retired from his position as Manager, Barclays Bank, Port Elizabeth in 1957

• Death: According to Meg Perkins (nee Francis) he died in 1964 as the result of a motor accident in Rhodesia.

• Historical: ¹⁴ After meeting SP at the Newlands rugby field Alma was surprised to receive a phone call one day asking her to a dance. She accepted and just before the dance mentioned to her friends that she could not remember what he looked like. She was told - “just look for the big chap with good manners - who, when he takes his hat off - is bald”

• Occupation: ¹⁶ Both Olga and Alma went to Teachers Training College in Cape Town where they qualified as teachers.

• Marriage: ¹⁴ Eddie was a dentist who had grown up in Smithfield and had set up a dental practice in Beaufort West. He married Olga in the same year as Matthys WEEBER died - and out of respect for him, the wedding was held in Graaff Reinett, some way off.

• Adoption: 1982, Toronto Ontario Canada. She was Adopted by Pieter Jocabus Weeber and Anne Murray Wilson. According to MOOC? 6/9/4046 33097 she was Mrs. J P Verster which is taken to mean she subsequently married J.P.Verster.
In KAB MOOC 6/9/3796 Ref 28122 a DN for Pieter Jacobus Weeber, her full name is stated as Justina Johanna Maria Verster (nee Davidtz) and there is a number 7036/70 scribbled against her name which may be an archival reference number.

• Historical: ¹⁴ The famous South African artist Jan Volschenk was an associate of the family in the area. In fact Olga and Eddie owned a Jan Volschenk painting of the Kaffirkuils river mouth (the river at Stillbaai) - which was given to them as a wedding gift. Cousin Jessie was a close friend of Vera Volschenk (his daughter) who is also well known and paints from her cottage on the banks of the river at Stillbaai. Olga and Eddie owned several Vera Volschenks which were passed on to the children.

• Marriage: ¹³ ^,16 This source confirms that "Pieter married but had no children of his own. He adopted a daughter Jessie Verster who was known by my family as cousin Jessie."

• Historical: In this source (Hooy-Vlakte) page219, there are two J.P.Verster's listed as having been members of the Town Council, J.P.Verster sr. having served 8 years from 1895 to 1902, and the other 11 years (onderbroke) between 1927 and 1938. The elder could have been married to Jessie,

• Historical: May had a great friend also a school teacher and this is a story told by a relative:My grandfather, Matthys Johan de Jager * 1872 told my mother about this Miss Cummings and how she died. She had her death outfit (shroud?) made and kept this in a hat-box which she then put on top of an huge clothes-cupboard in her bedroom. To do this she had to make use of a chair. Nearly every day she climbed onto the chair, took the hat-box down and spread the shroud out on her bed! This was to make sure that everything was in good order without any moths etc. And of course to medidate about the life hereafter. And then disaster struck! One day when she got onto the chair and was struggling to remove the hat-box with her thin and weakened arms (she was very lean) the chair tipped over and she had one mighty fall! The lady of the house found her on the floor, the doctor came and she was put in bed, but she never recovered and died the next days or several days later. But as she intended, no one had to struggle to get a shroud, she had hers with her in the room! Apparently my grandfather never blinked an eye when he told this story, and the kids didn't know whether they could laugh or not -- so they never laughed!
