• Alt Birth: His death notice MOOC KAB 6/9/145 Ref 9977 says that he was 63 y, 5m, 25 days old at date of death, namely 19 Nov 1873 thus calculating his birth as 25 May, 1810. This differs from the previous source, 10 Jun 1810, which date may well be his baptismal date, not confirmed however.

Oltmann married Anna Margareta Mynhardt [3478], daughter of G. Mynhardt [3487] and Maria Roos [3488]. Anna was born in 1823 in Juriesfontein District Beaufort West and died on 25 Mar 1877 in Home Of G.B.Blackall, Swellendam, South Africa aged 54.

2. Matthys se boedel SK KAB 6/9/672-2129 ( By his wife ) gives him as : † "Varschfontein", Beaufort-Wes dist., on 17.07.1911, age 79 jaar 10 maande, in other words September 1831. Now who is right? I would give the benefit of the doubt to his widow, namely that he was born *17.09.1831
3. He was baptised on 16.10.1831, but I have no written papers on this, but it makes sense.

• Alt Name: MOOC 6/9/18079-2046 says her mother was " Geesje Egberta born Van Oudtshoorn" whereas I have that she was born Van Rheede. I tend to think the MOOC refers to where she came from, and I lean towards keeping the Van Rheede name. No. Alwyn Smit points out that there was a time when double barrelled surnames were inuse and in this case the name Van Rheede van Oudsthoorn would have been current.

• Historical: ¹⁰ ^,11 Henry was a big powerful man with an imperious will. Very particular about English Grammar and Pronunciation! Henry became a staunch supporter of the Museum in Cape Town. Laurence Green wrote that he (Henry) sent specimen's of the Lammergeyer (golden eagle) to the Museum.

• Historical: ¹⁰ ^,11 The young boys helped Henry their father on the farm which he managed for a cousin John MOLTENO - apparently the boys suffered great hardships helping on this farm - in 1877 there was an immense drought - cattle died, thousands of lambs slaughtered as they were born - birds of all kinds died. -1878 was not much better and then in 1879 - torrential rains created havoc. in 1879 ALFRED left the farm for good. He couldn't stand it. Some of the sons continued with the NELSPOORT FARMING ENTERPRISE - AFTER Molteno's death on September 1886.

• Historical: 1839. HENRY'S mother (Alicia) died when he was an infant and his father died when he was young - in 1839. So he went to live with paternal aunt Fanny Soulby of Tattarshall - Lincolnshire. He was 15 years old when he left England - 9 Jan 1846.

• Family: Two sons, not listed, of his second marriage, died young. All four children were christened in the D.R.C. Beaufort West.

From 1876 to 1878 he worked as a lawyer for the Beaufort West Council.
After retirement he served as the permanent organist of the local NG Kerk. On his request, the Church Council installed a permanent organ fot the first time.
In 1881 he and his family left the town and moved to the diamond fields (of Kimberly)
