• Historical: He is named in the DN in KAB MOOC 6/9/57 Ref 1247 as a child by his mother and despite other inaccuracies in the list of children we think this one refers to Johannes Wilhelmius who was born in 1813 and is a reasonable fit.

Engela married Willem Jacobus Christiaan Boswell [2920]. Willem was born in 1813.

• Historical: KAB MOOC 6/9/33 Ref 7506 is a DN from which new information is obtained. Most events correspond correctly with the data for his parents except his mother's mddle given names differ. The DN states it is Johanna whereas the previous source gives it as Hillegonda. However he was born in George, near Pcaltsdorp where William Anderson and his wife Johanna Maria Schonken were living, and this could account for the name error on the DN.

After nearly 20 years in Swellendam, these highly respected ladies retired to Zuurbraak where they joined their widdowed sister Johanna and live out their lives there.

• Occupation: Abt 1830, Pacaltsdorp South Africa. ¹ ^,16 Catherine aka Kitty, was a gifted artist, and her father, William, used to tell friends that she must have inherited the talent from her mother, Catherine Turner, who was related to the famous English painter, Turner. Kitty was also dedicated to her work in the Sewing and Industry School
I.F.Do Preez records that she and her two sisters, Maria Elizabeth, and Williamina Isabella moved to Swellendam in 1855, where they opened a school at Morgenzon on the outskirts of the town and named it "The Home" Kitty kept house while the other girls ran the school, and she was the artist. Five of her seaweed collages depicting "The Home" and the Jordan River (in Israel) found their way into the Drostdy Museums at Swellendam (Three pictures) and at George (two pictures).I.F.Du Preez furthermore, shows photos in his report, of the 2 George pictures and that of her headstone at Zuurbraak where she died.

Notes: Bartholomew was a London Missionary Society Missionary at Dyseldorp, the mission station about 18 miles east of Oudtshoorn, to which he came as a teacher but where he was also engaged in evangelistic work. He was ordained on the 5th May 1848 and as pastor at Dysellsdorp also ministered to congregations at Oudtshoorn and elsewhere. He spent most of the remainder of his active years as minister of the Oudtshoorn Independent Church, retiring on 1st July 1896. The London Missionary Society (L.M.S.) credits him with 50 years service. His children and grandchildren erected a draped marble pillar in his memory in ht Presbyterian section of the Oudtshoorn Cemetery with an inscription which includes the statement that he preached the Gospel in the district for more than 50 years.

• Ordination: Minister of Religion, 5 May 1848, Pacaltsdorp South Africa. ¹ ^,9 ^,16 ^,23 Dr Philip carried out his ordination at the church in Pacaltsdorp after which he was appointed to the mission station at Dysselsdorp where he served for 22 years before proceeding to Oudtshoorn where he spent the rest of his long life in charge of the Congregational mission church with numerous outsstations
In the Helm Family History, it was his father William Anderson who ordained him.
According to I.F.Du Preez, this is correct. Present also at the ceremony were the Revs.T.S.Hood and R.Th. Gegorowoski.

• Occupation: Missionary Work, 5 May 1848, Dysseldorp, Oudtshoorn District, Cape Colony, Southern Africa. ¹ ^,2 ^,17 ^,23 He laboured at Dysselsdorp until 1862 and then he was called to Oudsthoorn where he served as a missionary in the Congregational Church for the next 38 years.

• Historical: 1856-1872. ⁹ ^,23 Matjes River had initially shown great promise but eventually became a financial burden and half of the farm had to be sold. Around thuis time a new church was built, still in use today alongside the church bell, the old manse, and a newer school, in a stupendous setting at the base of the Swartberg. A large portrait of B.E.Anderson still looms above the pulpit.

• Historical: 1862. ⁹ ^,23 The sheer size of the area became unmanageable and Anderson took charge of Outdtshoorn and Matjes River stations, and a new minister took over Dysselsdorp

• Historical: 1870-1879. ⁹ ^,23 In the 1870's there was a great shortage of missionaries, threatening the life of the Churches and B.E.Anderson along with Chatles Searle of Great Braak River, travelled to London in 1879, and they were able to recruit young men from the Harley Institute to volunteer in Africa. These included Rev.Ramage, who would in time manage Dysselsdorp, the Rev. G.B.Anderson who would begin a different Anderson dynasty in Pacaltssssdorp.

Burial: Pillar in Memory, Aft.19 Sep 1900, Oudtshoorn, Cape Colony, Southern Africa. ⁹ ^,23 He was burried in the old cemetery and subsequently exhumed and laid to rest in the cemetery off Condor Street where his descendants later erected a most impressive monument. Georgina lies burried beside him.

• Death: KAB MOOC 6/9/413 Ref 3694 is his DN which is mostly in agreement with the records so far inscribed into Legacy. One major difference is that the DN omitted 8 children that were shown in Legacy.However in examining the life times of the 8, 6 of them had died young and there is no indication as to the other two children, John du Toit and Charles but it may be reasionably assumed that they had also died at a very young age.
The other is that the DN states that Janet Susan married Adams, whereas the insciption in Legacy from another souce says that Janet Catherine was the bride. Thus in Legacy we have recorded an alternative name.

• Alt Marriage: 1842. ⁹ In this source there is a contradictory marriage date and place. To quote:- "William Anderson and John Melvill presided at their wedding in Dysseldorp in 1842. Theirs is the first entry in the well-preserved marriage register. They planned to live there, assisting the Melvills, and Bartholomew would live by his trade, run the school, and preach in the large district."

• Alt. Death: 20 Dec 1854. ⁹ ^,14 This date is confirmed in the Helm Family History, and it is recorded that she was pregnant with her 6th child, fell off a horse and that there was no doctor near enough to attend to her. She was just 35 years old.

Bartholomew next married Georgina Johanna Elliott [38], daughter of Rev. William Caldwell Elliot [84] and Georgina Johanna Caldwell [85], on 20 Feb 1856.⁶ Georgina was born on 2 Jun 1834 in Paarl, Cape Colony, Southern Africa^{⁶^,10} and died on 22 Aug 1889 in Oudtshoorn, Cape Colony, Southern Africa^{⁶^,10^,14^,25} aged 55. Another name for Georgina was Georgina Johanna Elliot ⁶ ^,10 ^,14 ^,25.^,28

Burial: There is a tablet to her Memory next to that of her husband Bartholomew.

• Historical: 1857. ⁹ Married in 1857, also daughter of a missionary, she was described as another dauntless woman, and had nine more children. In addition to running this enormous household of fourteen children, she acted as nurse, operated a small school, and ran the Sunday School of 200 children from 1863 to 1888.

• Historical: MOOC KAB 6/9/272 Ref.1733 This Death Notice omits 5 chikdren, four of whom died in infancy and the 5th, Helen Catherine born in 1864 is assumed also to have predeceased her mother.

Bartholomew next married Elizabeth Anderson [2274] after 1889. Elizabeth died after Sep 1900.

• Alt. Death: 1 Jun 1823, Pacaltsdorp South Africa. ¹ ^,2 ^,16 ^,23 This date was recorded in Atkinson's Book, (Source:Pacaltsdorp). But in the source p163, he died not quite 3 months after his birth.
On a visit to the graveyard in Pacaltsdorp in September 2005, I, Ralph Blyth Anderson found an inscription on his grave that he died during June 1822 and according to I.F. Du Preez (P32) also, this was 1 June 1822
