bullet  Events

• Family, 1818. He was the grandson of the first Robert Featherstone who came to South Africa in 1818. He was born in 1790 in Moulton, Devon, UK.He joined the 2nd battalion of the 38th Regiment of Foot (later the South Staffordshires), was wounded in Badajoz, Spain, (where Harry Smith met and married his beloved Jauna) and ended up as the garrison sergeant in Grahamstown in 1819. He left the army in 1830 and went farming.(See "Her South African Ancestors" by Cron Cronwright). Badajoz was besieged and sacked by the Duke of Wellington's Forces in March 1812 during the Peninsular War.
The story of Harry Smith is very well told in the book "Remember you are an Englishman" by Joseph Lehmann.

• Death, 1928. He died within 6 weeks of his wife.
