• Occupation: Farmer and Accountant. John Alexander Blyth was first a farmer and then an accountant in Beaufort West. His Death Notice MOOC KAB 6/9/655 Ref 3113 says he was a bookeeper.

• Family: At the request of his brother William Low Blyth who lost his wife and two children from Diptherea, he adopted his surviving son George Clarence Blyth who thereafter lived with them in Bird St Beaufort West.

• Alt Birth: 1860. His Death Notice records that he was 49 years and 11 months old, and as his death date of 22 November 1910 is confirmed, there is an alternative date for his birth which is 15 Dec 1860.

• Historical: The BLYTH's lived at 43 (or 39) Baird St. for many years, but the name of the street was changed to Bird St for no known reason as yet. After the death of May BLYTH, the last resident of the house, it was demolished and a police station erected on the property.

• Alt Birth: According to Robert Blyth he was born in Worcester, Cape Province, South Africa.

• Historical: John Alexander BLYTH (the eldest son of David Henderson Blyth) was born in Worcester, Cape Province in 1861. There is uncertainty about this as his parents were already living in Beaufort West having married there the previous year. He spent much of his life in Beaufort West. He worked first as a farmer and later as an accountant (book-keeper?) in the town.
There was a suggestion that he had won a medal at the Battle of Rorke's Drift in 1878 when he would have been barely seventeen. Subsequent investigation by Ralph Anderson has shown that he was not at Rorke's Drift. However he was connected with the Beaufort West Volunteer Rifles (a sort of home guard regiment )and was awarded the Cape of Good Hope Service Medal. He died at his residence in Beaufort West at the relatively young age of 48 and is noted as a book-keeeper by profession.
He had 4 children for whom data is available but Penny Sheppy has listed Dulcimer, Corinne and Ermine as three younger sisters for whom we have no details.

Cornelia was born in Jul 1852 in Beaufort West South Africa, died on 26 Mar 1938 in Beaufort West South Africa aged 85, and was buried in Beaufort West South Africa. Another name for Cornelia was Nellie Weeber.

• Alt Birth: Jul 1852 ?, Beaufort West South Africa. MOOC KAB 6/9/5062 58803 The Death Notice states she was a widowed housewife residing at 43 Bird St. Beaufort West and died in the Beaufort West Hospital at age 85 years and 8 months which makes her estimated birth date as July 1852. In her Will, copied but excluding its reference number, she left Erf 43 Bird St. as an asset in her Estate.
There is an image of her birth certificate that is not completely recorded and omits her actual birth date,

• Occupation: MOOC KAB 6/9/861 Ref 565 DN says he was an accountant and agent.

• Historical: George Kinnear BLYTH was an accountant. it is not clear how he came to be in the Transvaal but the discovery of gold may have had something to do with it. He practised as an accountant and legal agent in Heidelberg. He died there in 1912 and is buried in the old cemetery alongside his young son Heinrich Wilhelm. (CP note that he died at Erf No 12a in Beaufort West is clearly incorrect.)
For unknown reasons his father also moved to Johannesburg from Beaufort West. I suspect that his father moved to Johannesburg towards the end of the 1890's. He died in Johannesburg in 1908 and I have correspondence between my great grand mother Sophia (living in Johannesburg) and my grandfather in Heidelberg. (There is also a comment from Chris Pattinson that he may have rented a farm called Fairfield/Fairview on the boundary of Ladismith village before he went to Johannesburg).
My grandmother trained as a teacher and went to teach in the Transvaal. I suspect that she must have taught in Heidelberg where my grandfather practiced. (It may also be that my grandparents met in Ladismith when she was still a schoolgirl and that is why she went to teach in the Transvaal) They married in Ladismith in 1895 and settled in Heidelberg.
My Father listened to his mother's account of his father's death. He was apparently diagnosed as having liver failure but my father is convinced, from his mother's account that the cause of death was a ruptured appendix. Surgery for that was pretty heroic in those days.

Anna was born on 18 Mar 1875 in Ladismith, Cape Colony, Southern Africa and died on 7 Jun 1950 in Church St. Ladismith Cape aged 75. Another name for Anna was Anna Emily Blyth.

Ron was the blue eyed boy with curly blond hair - everybody loved him. Perhaps not so good at school but the master at making friends. So much so he was voted in as 'Junior Mayor' of Harare - not a mean feat. In his youth, I remember his great interest in Scouting, and he did so well becoming a 'Queen Scout' - also no mean feat. As a Queen Scout he attended the World Jambore in Japan - one of his highlights of his youth that I remember.
Back home he excelled in the printing business, having his own company 'The Print Shop' for many years.
But I think his great hobby of building things left us all in amazement. His wonderful job of building houses on his plot in Inyanga and the one he and Sue were building in Spain are testiment to that.
In all of this, he loved and was loved by Sue and his son Colin and daughter Tracy and Andy, and of course his grand children Corrie and Devan who are now mourning his passing with me and the rest of the family.
To all of you, we share some burden of your loss and promise to help you to achieve closure by all means possible.

"Ron, I just came back from Africa and I was going to telephone you to tell
you all about it. I got to admit it, I did pass quite a few tears when I
suddenly realized it was too late. The fact is guy, I walked by your old
house in Harare and along the roads we trod as kids; with Dad we recounted
the tales of family expeditions; I traveled to Kariba and passed beautiful
country you too traveled; I caught a Tiger fish too small for me to
challenge your catches (unfortunately); and certainly Karen and I well
remembered our fun visits to you in Harare.

The thing is my friend, you have done much in your life to support your
family, friends and country and I want to make sure you know that I know.
And, another thing, our walks in the hills and dales of England while short,
will be locked in my memory forever. We puffed and panted a bit, threw
ourselves on the grass to rest staring up into the sky, and carefully
calculated the distance to the nearest Pub. I so much would have liked to
do that over, and to visit your latest project in Spain. If it's OK with
you, I'd like to plan that with Sue, Colin and Tracey.

Another name for David was Dave Anderson.

• Death: 25 Nov 2004, Pretoria, South Africa. David died tragically in the home of his parents at 262 Thatchers Field, Lynnwood, Pretoria at about 10:30 in the morning of the 25th November 2004. From farewell notes he had carefully prepared and typed a day or two beforehand, he was apparently a very unhappy man and at the end of his tether, and had sought his own way out. However, he expressed only deep love for those dear ones he had left behind and bore no illwill to anyone. He was deeply sorry for what he had done and begged their forgiveness. Note: The above was written by his father on the 14th. December 2004.

His brother Edward Anderson (Canada) and Sister Helena Anderson (Zimbabwe) attended the funeral in Pretoria.

• Historical: ¹⁰ ^,11 Henry was a big powerful man with an imperious will. Very particular about English Grammar and Pronunciation! Henry became a staunch supporter of the Museum in Cape Town. Laurence Green wrote that he (Henry) sent specimen's of the Lammergeyer (golden eagle) to the Museum.

• Will Filed: 1888, Beaufort West South Africa. ¹⁰ ^,11 Executor's of his estate (whatever!) - included, eventually apparently, MATTHYS JOHANNES WEEBER OF THE FARM ELANDSFONTEIN ( maternal relation to his 1st wife).

• Historical: ¹⁰ ^,11 The young boys helped Henry their father on the farm which he managed for a cousin John MOLTENO - apparently the boys suffered great hardships helping on this farm - in 1877 there was an immense drought - cattle died, thousands of lambs slaughtered as they were born - birds of all kinds died. -1878 was not much better and then in 1879 - torrential rains created havoc. in 1879 ALFRED left the farm for good. He couldn't stand it. Some of the sons continued with the NELSPOORT FARMING ENTERPRISE - AFTER Molteno's death on September 1886.

• Historical: 1839. HENRY'S mother (Alicia) died when he was an infant and his father died when he was young - in 1839. So he went to live with paternal aunt Fanny Soulby of Tattarshall - Lincolnshire. He was 15 years old when he left England - 9 Jan 1846.

• Family: Two sons, not listed, of his second marriage, died young. All four children were christened in the D.R.C. Beaufort West.

Henry married Hermina Catharine Hendrina De Jager [3572],¹⁰ ^,11 daughter of Matthys Gottlieb De Jager [3570] and Antoinette (Anetta) Elizabeth Weeber [3627], on 16 Sep 1856 in Beaufort West.² Hermina was born on 29 Jul 1833 in Durbanville, Cape Town, South Africa,^{³^,10^,11} was christened on 15 Sep 1833 in Durbanville, Cape Town, South Africa,^³ and died on 14 Nov 1871^{¹⁰^,11} aged 38.

Henry next married Hendrika Jacoba Andrea Brandt [3582] on 28 Dec 1872. Hendrika died on 22 Jan 1893.
