JACKSON, Alfred De Jager
• Historical. The young boys helped Henry their father on the farm which he managed for a cousin John MOLTENO - apparently the boys suffered great hardships helping on this farm - in 1877 there was an immense drought - cattle died, thousands of lambs slaughtered as they were born - birds of all kinds died. - 1878 was not much better and then in 1879 - torrential rains created havoc. in 1879 ALFRED left the farm for good. He couldn't stand it. • Historical. HE wrote 'MANNA IN THE DESERT' - ( about life on a Karoo farm - latter half 19th C). Alfred after all sorts of endeavours eventually settled in the Transvaal became for a while (apparently) a successful stock broker - he died aged 83 at ONDERSTEPOORT - PRETORIA! Sept. 3.1944. |
