John Edwards was the 5th child of Edward Edwards [b.14 Mar 1794 in Deptford, Kent; d.6 Apr 1868 in Mowbray, Cape Town] and Jane Dendy [b.4 Jul 1808 in England; d.2 Feb 1883 in Davenport Villa, Mowbray, Cape Town. Rev, Edward Edwards was a Wesleyan missionary who arrived in the Cape on 15 Dec 1817. He went first to Liliefontein, then back to Cape Town and finally to the Somerset West/Stellenbosch circuit."

John married Ann Catherine LAWTON. (Ann Catherine LAWTON was born on May 27, 1832 and died on Sep 21, 1921.)
