Mozambique - East Southern Africa Coast
Be a Guest at the Anderson Safari Camp in an isolated and wild hideaway in Africa ...
If you take a look at the map of Mozambique you will see that the coast line of Mozambique runs sort of N – S with a few bulges here and there. Due to these bulges Pebane coast line runs NE – SW. We are 6 kms NE of Pebane. We are approximately 16 degrees south of the Equator.
This makes us pretty warm all year round. But as we are right on the beach – among coconut trees, and with the sea breezes, lends itself to a wonderful tropical venue for the serious fisherman and the whole family. We have the Mozambique Channel that runs between Madagascar and Mozambique , in which is said to be the best game fishing in the world – one wonders who said that? Pebane is situated in the province of Zambezia (one of five provinces) the provincial capital is Quelimane some 200 kms south of us (as the crow flies) and 320 kms by road. The area around Pebane is called Macuacuane (pronounced ‘Macuquane’) by the locals, meaning ‘bush’ – hence ‘Macuacuane Lodge’ got its name.
History :
The very colorful history of Mozambique (can be spelt Mocambique) goes back some 400 years – way too long for this very amateur writer. So we will skip the Vasco de Gamma landing – the slave trading – then skip plus/minus 400 years of the rise and fall of the Portuguese colony. The 26 year civil war ended in the early nineties leaving Mozambique a broken land. Amazingly she has come such a long way in such short a time. The Government is determined to progress – especially where tourism is concerned. To give you a little history of the Pebane area, I will allow myself a short digression. The town has a port – which in the ‘old days’ large ships could berth and carry away the copra, processed in large sheds in the harbor (one can still see the shells of these huge sheds in the port harbor). One can get a picture of how large this copra industry was by the vast coconut plantations, the largest in the world, that surround Pebane. The port was also used to carry away tons of ‘lagosta’ (lobster) per week. The derelict lobster ponds can be seen on one of the beaches close to the harbor. The small town of Pebane was the holiday ‘play ground’ for the rich – the remains of great mansions bear witness to this (a couple have since been restored), as do the remains of seven restaurants. The small Airport building is rather derelict –but the landing strip is still well kept - and used regularly. The history of our project only goes back a few years. In 1995 we were in Pebane, looking for good fishing areas. Back then we were so taken by the area that, ten years later when we decided to build on the coast – Pebane was the only choice. Mention must be made that world fishing and scuba diving championships have been held in the past at Pebane. Hopefully this may once again become an international venue.
