Events:

• Education: Allan Wilson School Salisbury, 1951-1956, Salisbury (Now Harare). Here he discovered a liking for technical matters and the art of carpentry which he retained as a hobby. He played field hockey and tennis instead of rugby because of the loss of a kidney at age fourteen. The enjoyment of the game of field hockey continued right through his stay in England, and tennis continues to be a core sport of his. He became a Prefect and a junior Officer in the school cadets which contributed to his understanding of leadership principles.

• BSc (Eng) Degree in Electrical: Engineering:Awarded by the University of London whilst attending a sandwich course of training by the then British Thompson Houston Company, 1958-1967, Rugby, United Kingdom. He entered the electrical power industry first in England then in Canada with Ontario Hydro starting in 1967. (This was Centennial year in Canada and his first year in his new adopted country - largely chosen for the opportunity of outdoor adventure.) He worked on distribution systems in England and on nuclear power station design in Ontario.
MBA Degree in business awarded by the University of Toronto on completion of the part time program in 1975 whilst working at Hydro. An interest in the business side of things developed and in 1980 till his retirement from hydro in 1993, he was Manager of various business units in Ontario Hydro.
Certified Financial Planner awarded by the Financial Planning Standards Institute in 1995 and licensed to carry out an investment and insurance business. From 1994 through to 2002 he established a financial planning practice in Assante with a strong emphasis on client service and relationships. A number of his old clients remained friends after his retirement from this second career.

• Historical: Entered the Scouting movement and with the family emphasis on camping, acquired a love for the outdoors and wildlife. He was a leader on numerous scouting camps and hikes, and continued with this lifestyle to this day. Whether it's cycling in summer or skiing in winter, the outdoors has always beckoned him especially when his wife, Karen joins him.
Family fishing trips started a lifelong competition with his father on who caught the first and biggest fish on many of his adult life fishing trips. He and his Father were the first shore Fisherman, after the five year moratorium, to catch Coho Salmon off the Rebecca Spit, Quadra Island in 2001. There was no agreement reached on who had the biggest fish after the two week stay. But, this was just an example of the lesson he learnt along the way - trusted friendships are the real winner in all these games we play.
His Mothers determination to enjoy life and her love of nature and art, were key to his adoption of these values. Once in Plettenberg Bay, while a teenager, his Mother announced the whole family was going for a walk on the rugged coast of the Roberg Nature Park. Even when we pointed out there was practically a gale storm raging outside, she was not deterred. That walk set the standard for his life in all areas of endevour. To this day, a walk in driving rain or snow is not out of the question, depending somewhat now, if there is Scotch to come back to!

William married Mary Birkett Dent [2366] [MRIN: 869], daughter of Thomas Dent [2641] and Mary Birkett [2642], in 1965 in England. Mary was born on 9 May 1944 in Teesdale England.

• Medical: November 2006. An account written by Penny of her remarkable recovery from a severe brain aneurysm.
"I suffered a brain aneurysm in February 1991 and after the initial hospitalization for 4 weeks in the ICU at The Ottawa General Hospital I was transferred to St. Vincent's for 3 months rehabilitation. This was a residential facility where I was monitored by their doctors and rehabilitation staff. For me they designed rehab exercises involving both physical, psychological and mental rehab. and after 3 months I was discharged to go home and continue a regimen to enable me to get back to "real life".
At home I was visited weekly by a rehab person who set me up to undertake various daily tasks. Based on the premise that if "one doesn't use it, one loses it" all these tasks were designed to return me to my routine domestic role and build on past interests, hobbies and my occupation (teaching).
Mike who was my greatest support and "cheer leader" thinks one of the most valuable cognitive elements of the rehab. program was keeping a daily diary of what I was doing, who visited me and what outings I enjoyed. During the St. Vincent's rehab. they got me back on the computer so I word processed my writing daily.......and resumed my "world wide" email correspondence. That went a long way to addressing my short term memory deficits as well as helping me process my thoughts clearly. The problem I had was being honest with myself (too proud!).....and others .... admitting that I did not remember! Mike was good about that one too, using "tough love" to force me to admit I did not remember while reinforcing what I had forgotten. I had to accept that no task was too menial, that everything helped either re-establish or make new brain pathways.
Another problem was orientation i.e. remembering how to locate shops and my other normal day to day destinations. I had to draw maps of how I would get to the supermarket, P.O. etc. from home. Initially I was banned from driving so I had to walk to these destinations from home if possible. Later after I had been weaned of the anti-seizure medication without repercussions, I undertook a defensive driving course to help me acknowledge and cope with deficits like my blind right eye. The day my driving privileges were reinstated I experienced the same joy I had when granted my driver's license as a 16 year old. 30 years later !!!
As teaching had been my profession they arranged for me to go into Manotick Elementary School as a teacher's aide to help teachers there with "one on one" instruction of developmentally delayed students. It was all voluntary of course but it began to build my self esteem that had taken such a bruising! The location of the school - a short walk from home was also convenient while I was not yet driving. In addition a friend of mine who tutored elementary students privately from home asked me to take over her students while she was away on a long vacation. That was my first paid work after the aneurysm!
Way back then the medicos had little hope that my short term memory would be restored to the extent it has, while they seemed hopeful that my sense of smell would return - it didn't! So I don't smell things burning, or B.O!! or perfume nor can I really taste my food. It was a small price to pay for being alive to tell the tale.
Through it all the encouragement from and patience, love, support of Mike, Kerry and Russ was pivotal in my recovery.
The following years saw Mike and me buying a retirement business in the Florida Keys where I was able to assist Mike in the running of a boat rental and gift store. Unfortunately 9/11 affected tourism quite drastically there and ultimately Mike had to resume his management consulting initially in Florida. Later in 2005 we moved back to Canada specifically to join Kerry and family in Calgary where I have started up running a small day care for toddlers from home while Mike has continued traveling on weekly consulting assignments."

?th century and a traoe of it, and the drawbridge still remains.D u:ring some repair operations oarried out in 1914, after stripping the walls of the existing house on the site, several very massive beams were
uncovered, showing that at one time the ceillings were many feet higher.Several small semi-circular w indows were also discovered near the :roof in the front (West) wal in one place together, as if the old mansion was once lighted in its upper storey by a range of small round topped,or semi-Gothic windows. Furthermore, on the basement may yet be seen the upper part of the remains of a stone doorway or large window of a distinctly eclesiastical, design (either the foil or quinqua foil)"
A fragment of a similar door or window oan be detected at the end of what is now used as a pantry. These remains are of the 13th. Or l4th.century at which period many noblemen copied ecclesiastical, architecture both in their castles and mansions. Doubtless these remains gave rise to the local tradition that at one time Bretts Manor house was a monastic institution but this is not true. The usual story is also told about a series of extensive underground, passages and wine cellars "used by the' monks". (?) , Of course, it is probable that the Bretts had good wine, ' cellars, cut in the chalk underneath, and it is also possible that a smal1
tunnel once existed from the interior of tbe mansion down under the moat and opening into a grove some distance off. as a means of escape from the enemy but since Danish times such passages in private manors would be of

.Morant says "the lower storey is of brick with very ancient Gothic windows tbe rest of plaster or roughcast". Edward Barrett had a daughter Ann who married Sir Thomas Corbet. While on tbis point, I may mention that, : there is a plaoe not far from here called Corbet Tey (the word "Tey'
being an old Saxon word for enclosure). 'This word naturally means Corbet enclosure, but some wit in the 18th oentury seems to have spun a yarn that Queen Elizabeth on her way to Tilbury, calling out to her knight who was riding too fast thus ' Corbet: stay " and from benceforth

The fact is' that the name Purfleet is simply a. con tracted form of Portfleet or the North of the fleet (called the Mardyke). It had its name as early as the time of the, Edviards, and is mentioned in court documents. These foolish stories seem to have been first told to Holman (whose manuscript is in Colchester museum) :from whom all subsequent historians slavishly copied them.

, William de Tracy t Hugh de Norville and Richard Brito or the Breton, and
it may only be the similarity ot "Brito" to "le Brett" that occasioned
the story. The nephew of, Thos.a Becket once had some land in Stifford..
and when Becket was Dean of the Collegiate Cburch, inside the castle of Hastings he. in his official capaci ty t appointed one of the chapter tbere to be incumbent of WEST THURROCK which church was a Pretend of theChapel of St .Mary-in-the-castle for many c enturies unt i1 the Reforrnatlon.
