1. Military Service: service of the English Army as a Lieutenant, Abt 1800. 2
W'ILLIAM CALDWELL 1756-1816. entered the army as Ensign in the 39th Foot(Dorsetshire Regt.) which served with distinction during the famous defence of Gibraltar and during which William was present, Exchanged to half pay of 72nd (Seaforths) 1785. Returned to full pay as Ensign in
75th (Gordons) in 1790. Lieutenant 77th Foot (Middlesex Regt.) 1791 Described later in a letter from Commander in Chief at the Cape reccommending his son Hilliam Bletterman Caldwell for a commission as "many years a. faithful Civil Servant in this colony". (P.R.O. W.O. 31/406) According to :East - India Co's F actory Records he was a "wine taster" Also we mustn't forget th e boarding house which must have been a good idea for getting all the daughters married off:
