1. Historical. Margaret Solomon was the daughter of the LMS missionary Edward Solomon, who in turn was part of the illustrious Solomon's of St. Helena. Of course this will open up a hornet's nest for you because half of South Africa is related to one another on the Solomon Family tree! Allan Solomon wrote a book "The Solomon's: The Genealogical Tree and Short History of the Solomon Family in South Africa" published by himself and printed by the Natal Witness: ISBN 0620127759, but I will photocopy some of the relevant portions if you like. Simply: Nathaniel Solomon (born Margate, England, 1735) married Phoebe de Mitz (born Leyden, Netherlands, 1749) when she was only about 14! Together they had at least 18 children (some say 21, in order to turn it into some kind of record, but I doubt that!). This was a very wealthy Anglo-Jewish family of merchants, but many of whose descendants also became very successful at law. One of their sons, Saul, set up business on St. Helena, after he had been dropped off there to die on route to India. 4 brothers joined him in time (Joseph, Benjamin, Edward, & Charles); Joseph married Hannah Moss and they had at least 9 children, 6 of whom survived to adulthood. For the sake of the children's education they moved to Cape Town, where the 2 oldest, Henry and Saul, joined them after initially being educated in England under the watchful eye of grandmother Phoebe! Their children included Nathaniel (died young); Henry (the 'Father of Seapoint'); Saul (the dwarf who had suffered polio as a child, but went on to become a member of the Cape Parliament, and certainly one of the most influential men in Cape Town for decades); Edward (this is the London Missionary Society Missionary mentioned below, and the father of the Margaret who married John Spyker!); Richard; Benjamin; Margaret (these last 3 all married and have extensive family trees); Isabella; Rose (these last 2 never married).
